Pet . Therapy. Notes...
incomplete & ambiguous losses.
physical loss of pet with unknown outcome

While there are many resources dedicated to physically locating a lost pet, few support the emotional impact of this loss.
The physical loss of a pet is a uniquely hard loss to process, and in my opinion, the most difficult to reconcile.
And yet, I find it to be the most unaddressed.
Here's the thing...
In death, we strive to arrive at a place of acceptance of the loss and to come to terms with a new reality.
It’s a distinct period of “Before” and “After.”
We understand that a chapter in our lives has ended.
We work to rebuild our lives without our pet.
We never have to like what happened, but at some point, we integrate the loss into our lives. We move into a life phase of “After.”
But incomplete losses aren’t as straightforward.
Without concrete evidence that you won’t be reunited with a pet, feeling stuck in grief is a reality. While not unachievable, arriving at a place of acceptance is less accessible by design.
When there is no resolution or lifeless body to communicate to the brain the finality of the loss, the hope of reunification lingers and complicates our ability to move forward.

Daily functioning is significantly impacted.

When our attention and focus are dominated by efforts to locate the pet?
When our minds are preoccupied with “what-ifs,” “if only,” and “should haves?”
When we are desperate to know “What Happened?”
When we ruminate on every potential outcome?
Even the slightest hope of being reunited leaves us in a constant state of limbo.
It’s all-consuming.
We wonder if and how we will ever get unstuck.
How do we continue to "do" life being this broken?
